Flight Simulators – The future of flight training

SYNTHETIC TRAINING

In 2015 we introduced our first dedicated flight simulator at 470 Sqn.

This utilised for its time the best consumer grade flight sim controls and gaming hardware to provide synthetic flight training for our cadets. Prior to the availability of VR equipment our simulator used a head tracking camera and wrap around screens to enhance the immersion during use.

In subsequant years the equipment was upgraded and revised over multiple generations as our training syllabus evolved.

4TH GENERATION

10 years later we are proud to introduce the 4th generation of our flight simulator which incorporates a new adjustable seat, flight controls and a high specification base unit with cutting edge graphics to power the VR headset.

Our approach to synthetic training is based on realism so we utilise physical controls to teach flight dynamics. This combined with multi-monitor and VR goggle support allows us to have a flexible training solution that can be adjusted to each student’s unique requirements.

RAF Air Cadet Flight Simulators

Bringing accessible flight training to all

Why Flight Simulators?

The RAF Air Cadets use flight simulators as an essential part of their training to help cadets develop aviation skills, improve flight understanding, and prepare for real-world flying experiences. These simulators play a crucial role in supplementing actual air experience flights (AEFs) and gliding opportunities.

Benefits of Using Simulators

Cost-effective – Reduces the need for actual aircraft use in early training.
Safe Environment – Cadets can practice without risk.
Weather-Independent – Training can continue even when conditions prevent real-world flying.
Repetition & Muscle Memory – Allows cadets to repeat maneuvers to improve skills.

Types of Simulator

The RAF Air Cadets utilize different types of simulators to provide a variety of training experiences:

  1. Basic Flight Simulators – Used for early training, these allow cadets to familiarize themselves with cockpit controls, basic flight maneuvers, and navigation. We can utilise Sqn laptops to provide this capability.
  2. Advanced Flight Simulators – More sophisticated setups that replicate the experience of flying modern aircraft, such as the Grob Tutor, the primary training aircraft for cadets.
  3. Virtual Reality (VR) Simulators – Some RAF Air Cadet units such as 470 are now using VR-based training, which provides an immersive flying experience.
  4. Glider Simulators – These help prepare cadets for the Viking T1 glider used in the Gliding Scholarship program and are available at Gliding Centres like RAF Kirknewton.

How are they used?

  • Initial Flight Training – Cadets can learn basic flight principles before stepping into a real aircraft.
  • Navigation & Instrument Training – Simulators allow cadets to practice map reading, flight planning, and instrument flight in a controlled environment.
  • Emergency Procedure Training – Simulators enable safe practice for dealing with engine failures, bad weather, and other flight emergencies.
  • Preparation for Flying Scholarships – Cadets applying for Flying Scholarships or Gliding Scholarships often use simulators to sharpen their skills.
