Space Studies

What you will Study

The Level 2 certificate in space studies was designed in consultation with military space specialists from UK Joint Space, the National Space Centre, teachers and the RAFAC Space Team.

As our parent service has extended its capabilities into new areas and nowcontributes to the joint service UK Space Command, a new training syllabus and qualification was introduced in September 2024.

It follows the same model as our wider progressive training syllabus where you would work through 3 different tiers to get different badges:

Unit 1: Fundamentals of the Solar System (Blue Space Syllabus)

  • Features of the solar system
  • Scientific theory of how the universe was formed
  • Science of the moon and the ways it influences Earth
  • Operational orbits and their uses

Unit 2: Spare exploration and its scientific impact (Bronze Space Syllabus)

  • How technology designed for space is used on Earth
  • Applications and dangers of satellite systems
  • History of rocket technology
  • How different types of rocket propulsion systems work
  • Scientific significance of missions to the moon

Unit 3: Our future in space (Silver Space Syllabus)

  • Impact of crewed and uncrewed missions on scientific discovery and space exploration
  • How space telescopes contribute to current and future understanding of the universe
  • How UK Space programs and space related initiatives contribute to the UK’s future in space

At 470 we have all the technical facilities and know how to help you complete this completely free qualification during your Air Cadet career.
