STEM Camp at RAF Lossiemouth
This summer two cadets from 470 (Falkirk) Squadron attended the annual STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) Camp at RAF Lossiemouth on the Morayshire coast.
Cadet Rebecca Leishman and Kyle Sneddon were very fortunate to be selected for what proved to be an extremely rewarding course.
Cdt Leishman explains more…
The STEM residential course at RAF Lossiemouth was an incredible experience. We travelled up to Lossie by coach to stay on base for five days from the 3rd to the 7th of July. The residential camp itself was amazing with great facilities and a laid back atmosphere that settled everyone. On the first day we all got sorted into groups of five cadets which was going to be our team for the rest of the camp. Throughout the whole week I got to see lots of the Typhoon aircraft in action – we even got to see them up close and talk to the pilots and engineers.
The whole reason of this residential course was to increase our knowledge of STEM. We did this through inventing, creating and producing a glider which could fly for a period of time. We then had to create presentation to show off our product which our team ended up winning! During the week we went on several trips visiting museums and universities to see different technologies in action.
I managed to meet incredible people during the camp that I hope to keep in touch with for a long time. We also achieved two awards during this week: the CREST award and the Industrial Cadet award both at Silver level. This week turned out to be one of the best weeks of my summer and a highlight of my year!
Both cadets were presented with their awards by Group Captain Carol Vorderman.
