470 Visit NMOF East Fortune
On Saturday October 10th, a group of cadets and staff from 470 Sqn visited the National Museum of Flight at the former WW2 RAF airfield at East Fortune in East Lothian.
This was a visit we had in the pipeline for a while as we wanted to let cadets who had not visited the museum before get the opportunity to see the attractions. As fortune would have it we found out only a few days before that the Avro Vulcan XH558 would be flying over the museum as part of its North loop farewell tour before it’s finally grounded so our timing could not have been better.
Thankfully the scottish weather held out and just after 2pm we could see those familiar plumes of exhaust smoke from the Rolls Royce Olympus engines in the distance approaching rapidly. The aircraft performed a slow loop of the airfield before rolling west towards Dalkeith. For many of us it was the first and last time we would see an example of this aircraft flypast and it was certainly something very special.
For the remainder of the day we made the most of the exhibits before the cadets raided the gift shop.
